Stored-Product Fumigation: Phosphine, Sulfuryl Fluoride and Compliance

Fumigation is the only reliable way to eliminate all life stages of stored-product pests — weevils, borers, moths — inside sealed silos, stacks and containers. Aluminium phosphide tablets and pellets (Phostoxin class) release phosphine gas on contact with atmospheric moisture; sulfuryl fluoride (Profume class) is the alternative for structures and timber pests.

Both gases are lethal to humans and their sale and use is restricted to certified fumigators. A compliant job requires gas-tight sheeting (Pro-Tarps) or a sealable structure, phosphine monitoring with a Fumiscope-type instrument, temperature logging, SCBA standby equipment, and post-fumigation clearance testing before any re-entry.

Grain-board and port tenders specify treatment concentration-time products, exposure periods (typically 5–14 days for phosphine depending on temperature) and clearance documentation.
